My Son is Home and All is Well with the World

...and he genuinely seems happy to be home for the holidays!!!  What a great feeling. He will be turning 20 years old in a few weeks and I do believe he is appreciating us more the older he gets. Finally ;-)

We picked him up at the airport on Sunday morning (after 24 hours of traveling time - due to his plane breaking down in Salt Lake City) - so instead of picking him up at 11:30 pm, he didn't arrive until 10:00 am the following morning.

By chance, we were both wearing cat shirts that day!!!  Without any preplanning:

Anyway, it is great to have him home, as well as my mom who is visiting us this week (coincidentally ;-) )

Hope your holidays are shaping up just as well!

Reunion and More!

Well, my high school reunion turned out to be a fun event. Glad that we made the trip - it was a very long drive. Luckily we drove up on Thanksgiving Day which meant zero traffic on the way up. The return trip on Sunday was an 11 hour ordeal - including a phone call from our son's girlfriend on their way from Idaho to Salt Lake City to catch a flight. She informed us he was headed to the ER. Looks like it may have been a bad case of food poisoning. He was too weak to take the flight, resulting in an overnight stay in SLC. On Monday, was was able to fly back to school, only to have to go to urgent care a few days later as he swelled up in an allergic reaction to one of the medications .... Talk about long distance stress!!!!!

On Friday night we went roller skating at the rink where we met and to dinner with some classmates. That was almost nicer than the reunion since we could more easily chat.

It led to me telling the story of how MB and I finally started dating after knowing of each other for years and living only a mile apart. It went something like this:

*copying from my facebook page*

Realizing after telling the story of how MB and I finally started dating after knowing each other since I was about 13, a story involving a real estate attorney who I once worked for - and his friend who met up with us at a celebrity male impersonator show aka drag queen show in NYC, leaving to go back to NJ in the middle of the night, such that the parking garage was closed but my tiny Plymouth Champ fit around the barrier, and then being asked on a date by the friend who had his own bookie, and was very sketch, but who liked my glasses and said I looked like a librarian, yet I still went on an ice skating date with him at Mennan arena that went so badly (including insisting I drive him in his car) that I was relieved to see Andy also at the rink, so I tapped him on the shoulder. This story does not merit retelling again in person... Makes me sound nuts ;-)

Nothing Quite Like Sending My Photo to Random Strangers.... son wanted to test out why he wasn't receiving photo messages on a different phone no. than he normally uses. He messaged me to send a photo to a specific number.

I sent a photo of his dear old mom, i.e. me - three times - and got a response back "Who is this?" - It appears he texted me the wrong phone number - meaning I have sent a photo of myself three times to a random stranger who probably thinks I am interested in them grumpy emoticon

Next time I revert back to sending cat photos.. update: VC messaged me back: "that should be my phone XD; sorry if it wasn't XDDD; Lol make a new friend"

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!! :)

*PS: I have an awesome giveaway of a necklace going on here.

Acting for Dummies

So I have been taking an acting class - for fun- the past couple of months.

And let me tell you, it is a lot more complex than it seems. Hoping I pull it all together for when we present to the other students on the 14th...

The class is the Meisner Technique. It involves repetition exercises - and as such would appear very bizarre to those not familiar with the method. I was struggling a bit and felt I might need to transfer to Acting for Dummies, but I had a big breakthrough this week and my scene partner and I rocked it lol.

It is funny the twists and turns life takes. When I was a child I was so painfully shy that I had a hard time speaking in front of anyone. Fast forward to now and in middle age I am studying acting.

What are you trying in middle age that you would have been fearful to attempt at a younger age??? A new class? A new hobby? A new attitude? I'd love to hear.....

A Review: Aurorae Yoga Sport Bag

I love, love, love to walk. There is a walking trail a few miles from my house, so I frequently meet up with a walking buddy (I have several on call lol) -- and by the time I walk from my house to meet them, to the trail and back, I have done a full 7 miles!! Tired of the flimsy string pack I usually use to carry my wallet, phone, water bottle, tissues, etc., today I tried Aurorae's Yoga Sport Bag. Here I am headed out down my driveway...
...and then on to the walking trail on this beautiful fall day. I am bundled up as usual even thought the temperature was about sixty lol
I have to say the bag came in handy!! And my friend thought it was a great looking bag...

**I realized after I got home that I should have adjusted the bag so that it was higher on my body. It can be easily tightened up. For those who intend to use it go go to yoga, there is an attachment to hold a rolled up yoga mat.

Getting Nostalgic

As I prepare for an upcoming BIG high school reunion, I have been digging through old photos. Here is one from 1984...Very eighties. From the perm to the tail ;-)

My mom, who never even permed her own hair - permed mine and my sister took the photo. My face is swollen from a trip to Virginia Beach - bad sunburn...

#fbf me in 1984. Who else had a tail? #eightieshair

But seriously, the eighties were great!!!!  Miss the fun of dressing up eighties style...

Darn You Netflix!!!

I always scoffed at those who binge watched TV shows, and then my acting instructor (yes, I am taking lessons for fun) - recommended House of Cards. So I ordered Netflix and proceeded to watch all 39 episodes in a week and a half.

It was not a very productive week.

Always enjoying a good comedy, and a fan of Tina Fey, I have now started on The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. It is so ludicrous that it works.

And apparently I am also very easily amused. Last night's episode (still on season 1) had Titus going to the ATM to withdraw the remaining $2.00 in his account. Yet the fee was $3.00 - so the machine kicked out a negative $1.00 ... an hour later I was still giggling...and this is not subtle humor lol.

What is your latest Netflix obsession???

Well, I'm No Denise Austin, That's For Sure!

I have been working out to the same DVD for over a year now. Do you ever notice those exercisers in workout videos who can do leg extensions or sit-ups with their legs straight up in the air??? Um, yeah, that is SO NOT ME!!

Very frustrating. And what is also scary is that I sometimes sway side to side on the balancing on one foot exercises.

That is not a good sign as I approach a huge milestone birthday in a couple years.

Hope it is not a sign of senility, as we have already discovered I am sometimes ready to enter the wrong car in the parking lot!!

It's Elemental!

This was the first time in 9 years that someone in an identical car parked near me. 3 spots away. So guess which car I thought was mine? It even made a noise when I clicked the remote unlock.. But sounded like the beginnings of an alarm. Had I approached from the rear the beer sticker would have been a dead giveaway..

I know craft beer is the huge new trend, but I have never been a beer drinker. The taste just doesn't appeal to me :P

but seriously, I wonder if my remote key actually unlocked the car doors. I didn't want to find out.

So much for my car always being the easy one to find in a parking lot!

Aurorae Yoga Mat: A Review!

I just received a new yoga mat courtesy of Aurorae. Let me tell you these yoga mats are thick and sturdy - especially in comparison to my old yoga mat!

To illustrate, Ms. Pumpkin didn't much feel like working out on my old, thin yoga mat that needed to be placed on a carpet, so that I wouldn't injure my back when laying on the mat doing bicycles, etc.

But with my new mat from Aurorae, Pumpkin is ready to go!

The mat has a soothing Wooded Pine pattern on it (part of their new Northern Lights line) - and there are many other patterns available as well.

Thank You Note Etiquette vs. Nothing

My new dry cleaner wrote this handwritten letter and it arrived in a more timely fashion than actual thank you letters I've received or not received in the past- truth be told..

Not that I keep track, but still awaiting a thank you note for a wedding gift (aka cash) that was sent LAST November.

Who else keeps track of this type of thing ???

I made it on the Finale of Under the Dome!!

It was a fun time on the set of Under the Dome. I was sweating until the last few minutes figuring that VC and I had been cut - but we made it on with minutes to spare! Too bad this was the series finale :/ Hopefully TV/Film will flourish in NC again sometime soon...

My Son's Latest Video!

Many of you have followed Austin's juggling journey. He has such discipline. Has been practicing most every day since he was 9!

Anyway, we have had a fun summer together. He heads back to college in Utah on Wednesday. Maybe I will get my blogging mojo back in the fall.

In the meantime, please enjoy his latest video. It is epic :)

Juggling Life

Oh, hey there. Hello.

Life has been a whirlwind since VC returned from college for summer break.

Shorts to Avoid

Well, Spring has fully sprung. I've been doing a lot of walking after putting out on Facebook that a do a nice 8 mile walk and asking if anyone would like to join me...

One pair of shorts to be avoid on said walk, or any walk for that matter, is flesh-colored shorts!! I memorialized the moment in the following Facebook post:

"Put on some new shorts today; snipped off the tags and then walked outside and realized the shorts were practically the same color as my legs, so it looked like I wasn't wearing any confused emoticon I continued to town regardless...."

My Brief Blurry Appearance in The Longest Ride

If you get a chance, I get on out and see The Longest Ride - the new Nicholas Sparks movie in theatres now. Don't be fooled by the negative reviews, the movie is quite entertaining and the sets are incredible...As you can see from the trailer, it is two stories woven into one. Even my husband thoroughly enjoyed it!

It was a fun three days for me filming among the 2,000 extras in the indoor rodeo scenes. And it was thrilling when I heard from a film friend the day after the premiere saying she saw my blurry self in the film!!!

You can see me in two spots - one - dancing in the stands moving my hands side to side - right side of screen, but the most noticeable shot is during the pyrotechnics scene when Luke finds out what bull he will be riding. It is dark around me but you can clearly make me out clapping when they pan over to the stands :)

Here's what I am wearing in case you are interested in trying to play Where's Carma:

I Don't Know if I Will Be Able to Make it Through This Book!!!

After eagerly awaiting for the international bestseller over 2 million copies sold "the life-changing magic of tidying up" - for months...since I reserved it at my local library, it finally arrived!!

I was eager to delve into the Japanese tidying up tips since, although I am not living in a cluttered home, there is always that one closet.....

Safe to say from many of the tips provided, the author must live alone and not have any children...

Irregardless of that, the book borders on OCD to the extreme.

The author gets excited in a way about cleaning that I have not seen elsewhere - e.g. Page 79 "When you stand in front of a closet that has been will feel your heart beat faster and the cells in your body buzz with energy. This energy will also be transmitted to your clothes."

She also compares balling up socks to committing genocide.

And the "clothes have feelings" quotes are plentiful:

"Be careful not to bury clothes in the cupboard even if they are off-season . Clothes that have been shut up for half a year look wilted...instead let some light and air in occasionally. Let them know you care and look forward to wearing them when they are in season." Page 85

I truly could use a few tips, so I will plod along...and hope for a few nuggets between the drivel.

As many have said in the reviews, the book can be summed up into one sentence. "Does the item bring you joy" - There, I saved you buying the book.

if you have some time to kill, check out the reviews on Amazon, especially the one from the husband who said something along the lines of "I hate this book. My wife tossed out my old iPod charger, and now I can't charge it"

The book does encourage a HUGE overhaul at once, not tossing out things here and there every day. For some people that is probably what is needed, but if you, like me, are just in need of smaller scale tidying help...this may not be the book for you. *I copied some of this from my facebook page since I was too lazy to retype it, hence the different fonts ;)

Get Out and Do!

I have been very preoccupied with getting older recently, so I have challenged myself to explore some new things just for the heck of it and to challenge the belief that getting older makes one "less than"....

A few weeks ago I signed up to be a "model" in a fashion show put on by a local boutique. It was a prom/bridal show at a local convention center.

I got there on the day of the event and quickly realized I was about 30 years older than most of the models, but I still had fun participating! I wore an "age appropriate" bridesmaid style dress...

...trying several other things as well....More to come, but I will be blogging a lot less frequently and I am already blogging infrequently!

Time to get away from the computer, enjoy the spring weather and DO!

Another Banshee Appearance!

I had the pleasure of appearing in another episode of Banshee last night (Season 3 Episode 6) - as an Amish mourner.

Here are a few screenshots:

(in these shots I am in the second row - far right)

..and here are some screenshots of the funeral procession.

(I am second from the right in the first one and far right in the second one)

Unfortunately this season will be my last, since my state foolishly did away with the film incentives that were generating millions in income for the state. Banshee has moved on to Pittsburgh :/

Carma Cooks!

It has been forever since I posted a recipe. Here is one I make periodically that is absolutely delicious - and oh so easy!
1 Cup Flour
½ teaspoon salt
2 eggs, slightly beaten
1 Cup Milk
1 Tablespoon sugar

Combine flour, salt, sugar. Mix together in a bowl and make a hole in center and add the milk and eggs and mix well. Heat 1 Tablespoon of oil in skillet or crepe pan *** or just spray some PAM***

Make sure oil is hot before adding crepe mixture. Pour in enough batter to cover the bottom of the skillet in a very thin layer. Cook until it seems set and the edges are a little dry. Turn over and cook other side.

My favorite toppings: Jarlsberg cheese and mushrooms cooked w/Herbs de Provence seasonings or for dessert: melt butter on top and sprinkle on some cinnamon and sugar – another variety I haven’t tried yet: melt some Nutella – add strawberries and drizzle chocolate and a dollop of whipped cream on top!

My Banshee Debut!!

On January 9th, I made my debut as an "extra" in the Cinemax Series: Banshee.... It was such a privilege to work on this show. I hope that many of you watch it. Here are a couple screen grabs, the first of which was tweeted out by Cinemax! Both of these photos are from Season 3 Episode 1...
and here is a photo from last Friday's Episode - me as an Amish woman hanging laundry - circled in red on right side of screen.
More to come...Stay tuned!

Counter Histories: A Documentary Worth Watching!

I recently had the pleasure of being featured in this historical project related to the Civil Rights Movement. It is a documentary about The Friendship 9, a group of African Americans who attended Friendship College and staged a sit-in at a diner in Rock Hill, SC in 1961.

Please take a peek at the video if you get the chance (It is only 8 minutes long...)

Counter Histories: Rock Hill from Southern Foodways on Vimeo.

Much appreciated! *It is a very timely documentary as the "Friendship 9" will have their criminal records cleared this month-- 54 years after the sit-in.

...And a Happy New Year!

Hope everyone's year is off to a good start! My crazy son asked if we could spend New Year's Eve in Times Square, NYC. My initial reaction was "NO WAY, WHAT ARE YOU INSANE?"

But after much politicking, he talked me into it and a hotel was booked. I was so stressed out the night before NYE (in anticipation of the craziness - crowds, pushing, possible protesters etc.)  I broke out in hives again :/ I just do not handle stress well lately.

We headed to NYC at about 10:00 in the morning, meandered around and saw some nice sights, such as the windows in Lord & Taylor, Empire State Building and Two Brothers Pizza ;-) At 1:00 pm we headed to the square. It was already packed with people. We managed to squeeze in after going for what we knew would be our last pee of the day - Thank you TGIF for permitting us to use the bathroom :)

We were barricaded in and had an EXCELLENT spot right near the stage where T Swift would be performing. It was all going according to plan, until the cops came to move everyone away from the stage and back out of the barricades for screening. One cop told us to head to the M&M Store and that he would let us all back in the area where we were. Liar >:-(

Long story short, we got moved up two full blocks, to where we could barely even see the stage :( It took hours and lots of being pushed to get through security... We finally had our spot so we sat down a bit on the sit-upons I am glad I thought to pack...

We still had a decent view of the ball.
15 minutes before the ball dropped these folks next to us got engaged. awwwwwwwww.....
We had to watch Taylor Swift perform on the tv screen since we could barely see her silhouette :/ She sounded great!
and then the ball dropped and we could finally pee!!!! so that was approximately 12 hours without going to the bathroom!!!!!!!!!!! IT WAS NOT EASY. We had to make it back to The Port Authority which was several long blocks away before we could locate a bathroom. Of course, neighboring businesses/hotels in Times Square did not want non-guests to use their bathrooms....
Well New Year's in Times Square can now be crossed off my bucket list. Not that it was on it in the first place!!!! And I have newfound appreciation for being able to use the loo whenever I want!
