Traveling Alone

I was saddened to read that the body of Sarai Sierra has been found in Turkey. I have been following this story closely since a high school classmate of mine opened up a coffee shop in Istanbul.

It was very surprising when it was first discovered that she was missing that Sarai, a mother of two in her thirties, had traveled to Turkey alone to take some photos for her photography hobby.

This was her first time outside the country.

Gotta say that I have never been brave enough to travel alone. The thought has always spooked me a bit, worried about this or that happening, such as being stranded, when reality is I could probably navigate the situation.

Still, I continue to be fearful. My thoughts are with her family, especially her young children.

Have you ever gone on a trip alone?

When I was 18 I traveled alone for a time on my way to meet a friend in Italy. I stopped in Frankfurt, Germany for a full day layover, and took the train into the city. ON the train, I was approached by a Middle Eastern man who demanded that I go with him to a hotel. It was pretty scary, but I was able to keep my wits about me and get away from him. Traveling is wonderful, but traveling ALONE is never a good idea.

Oh, my gosh, I have not heard about this tragic story, how horrible.

Oh, and no, I am such a huge chicken, traveling alone would freak me out and I watch way to many Criminal Minds, CSI and all those stupid shows that put silly stuff in my head.

No, but my mom does, all the time. She's been all over the world (Korea, Turkey, Iraq, Kosovo), including Turkey, where she met her second husband. There are times when I have that spirit, but I like being a homebody.

No way... my parents hated when I would even just drive to their house 30 minutes away by myself. I'm such a bad traveler anyways, I couldnt go by myself.
So sad... we live in a crazed world.

I really don't think I could ever travel alone. What a horrible loss for her family.

Very sad story Carma. My prayers are with her family.

I have never traveled overseas alone, but in my younger days had several solo adventures.

Wow, I hadn't heard this story...so sad :(

I do travel by myself all the time though...not so much overseas, I suppose!

Such a heartbreaking story :( I honestly can't imagine how her family must feel.

I used to take a lot of vacations alone as a kid. Actually, my parents both put me on a Lufthansa flight to Germany when I was seven all by myself. I got to fly with other kids and go in the cockpit and the flight attendants took extra good care of us. Years later (in my teens, early 20s), I would often go to Europe with nothing but a backpack and a travel guide. I LOVED it. I know it's scary but navigating your way through a foreign country is such an empowering experience... and it's something I'll carry with me forever.

Happy Valentine's Day, bunny! XOXO

No, I've never traveled alone. Then again, I like having memories that I can share with family and loved ones. Being with someone that you love and experiencing it together makes it all the more beautiful. That and I don't have the nerve :)
