Just Me Being Judgmental

I was looking through one of those local magazines that you get for free at the grocery. *I like free*

There it was again - another studio has opened - where they teach people to paint while serving wine. UGH. The photos of people holding a glass of wine in one hand and a paintbrush in the other just screamed,"Look at me. I am so uppity and fake classy." Ah, I think the word I am looking for is "pretentious."

Not to judge.

Not sure about you, but I prefer to do my paintings without libations - and they still come out halfway decent.

Yep, the new marketing seems to include the constant, "Let's make it a wine tasting" Or a "Random Act of Kindness" slash type of fundraiser, not sure how if it is planned it is a Random Act of Kindness but since that is the hip new buzz phrase they are going with it and it works :)

That does seem to be all the rage lately. I'm sure its just for a fun night out - not so much the artistry of it all... or to just get sloshed :)

Not a form of marketing that has reached our shores yet but I can see where you're coming from. It does seem rather false and pretentious.

On the other hand, I have to concede that many artists in all different fields have been at their most inspired when freed from the constraints of a sober and self-critical mind (i.e. when they were pretty sloshed). So maybe the combo of booze and paint is inspired!

And... on a general note: *Can* you teach someone to paint? It's something that I've always wondered. Maybe I'm a defeatist here but I tend to think that to learn to paint you pick up a brush, daub it in paint and just see where it takes you. If you half-way enjoy the experience you do it again ... and again... until you've got something that makes you smile inside.

BTW - I realise that you very wisely do have a life beyond the web, but crumbs, I miss you. When I see you pop up in my Reader you're still an 'instant read'). :)

As a qualified art teacher (I know that's hard to believe) I can't think of anything worse than a wine and paint evening. The 2 things just don't go together anyway. Painting is a creative, dirty business, not a dinner party type activity.

I always find it funny when people say they like to write while drinking. The one time I tried to have a glass of wine while writing a paper I could not concentrate! I would assume that alcohol would be the same for painting.

Bit strange.Might be good if when they are painting in watercolour and then forget it is wine they are holding not water.
