My Latest Foe: Hashimoto's (alternate title: "Hashimoto's Can Kiss My Lily White Butt")

Things have been very quiet around here. Almost too quiet. I get very suspicious when things are quiet, usually with good reason. I haven't had a formidable foe since the Bellydance Smackdown days....

and then comes my recent diagnosis: Hashimoto's Disease :-(

If you are not familiar with Hashimoto's, it is an autoimmune disorder where the body basically attacks the thyroid gland, leading to all sorts of fun symptoms, like fatigue, hair loss, anxiety, depression, hoarseness, puffy face, weight gain, muscle aches, increased sensitivity to cold, etc. etc. etc. There is no cure, but it is commonly treated with Synthroid which is basically synthetic thyroid hormone. There is much debate over whether this is the best route to take...

Going back over two years, at my physical my TSH levels were "off" - I was prescribed medication but it sent my readings out of range in the total opposite direction -- since then I have not been taking any medication. I became concerned when at my physical this year, my TSH level was still high (signifying hypothyroidism) -- I went back on medication for three weeks and could not tolerate it.

I figured there was nothing left to do, until a few weeks ago when I was working out and flipping channels (see a pattern here?). My ears perked up when on a local TV show, they had a "thyroid specialist." I listened intently, and made an appointment to see him. His theory is that in a high percentage of those being treated for hypthyroidism there is really an underlying cause: Hashimoto's Disease- that needs to be treated, especially since the odds are that if you have one autoimmune disorder there is a big chance you will get another if you do not get it under control...

I signed up to take the thyroid antibody test to see if this was the case, and sure enough, my results came back positive, which pretty much sucked.

I've made an appointment to meet with an endocrinologist in the hopes that he can work with me to minimize the symptoms/slow the progression through changes to my diet. I've been doing some reading and appears that a Gluten Free diet may help. I've been trying that for over a week and it hasn't been all sunshine and roses!!!

Whatever it takes to beat this into submission, that's what I'm willing to do...

So when you may have read my previous post and thought, "pffffft -- like she's ever had a problem maintaining her weight" - au contraire, mon frere!! I struggle just like everyone else...

It is what it is I guess, but I'm not that good at accepting things - and I'm not one who wants to be pitied, so I just move on but continue to research as best I can and seek help if need be....

I promise this will not become a blog about illness, but I will mention my progress every now and then for those who may be interested in lifestyle/diet changes that I am making and how they are working. If that's not your cup o' tea, I'll have plenty of other topics interspersed as well like I normally do :-)

P.S. Thanks to those of you who have already grabbed my new button!
