Which is Why It is a Good Idea

I decided against signing up for a degree course at the local Massage School. MB and I were driving by over the weekend and I remarked, "It would be nice to go there; if only I didn't hate touching people." Although I did continue to contemplate it...

Now that I am armed with this new "non-showering percentage of the population knowledge," it will serve as a further deterrent and save me over $2,000 on another degree I'd probably never use.

Besides, when I watched an introductory video on their website, it featured two blindfolded (I kid not!) masseuses massaging someone. One was working on the person's back and the other massaging a foot. Always been slightly creeped out by feet, unless they are cute little baby feet...

Are you a masseuse who has a special trick to getting over touching complete-and possibly smelly strangers? Have you ever wisely talked yourself out of a degree that you just knew deep down was not a good fit? Are you still searching for what you want to be when you grow up?? Me too.

P.S. Spent the day at the zoo yesterday. Will need to post a photo or two. Several people smelled worse than the animals. This topic has more mileage than I ever imagined....

This is the story of my life. I am always thinking about doing something new, and then I either just don't do it or end up hating it and quit. And everything seems like an awesome idea at first. My new idea is to become a personal trainer. We'll see how long this one lasts.

Yeah, I don't want to touch people either. My daughter is considering being a podiatrist, and obvi, there are grosser career paths she could choose from, but my first comment was, You do know you'd have to touch FEET, right? LOL

You made me laugh!
However I think that any person with a sane mind would shower before getting a massage, or going to the doctor, or "whatever"close contact with someone.
Or not?
I'd do.

I personally get freaked out at massages because I kept thinking "I dont know this person & their hands are all over my body" - something weird about that...

I AM still wondering what I want to be when I grow up. Seriously, this morning, I kept thinking, I'm 38 but I want to see about going into photography. We never give up dreaming, do we?

Ahhhh now I know who it is...I was up to about 5 cosmos after your email...Lololol....!..Hope I didnt sound to rude...but seriously I am thinking very critically about blogging and what is reading worthy..now I have to go check it out...just for my own curiosity...and dont do it...the massage thingy...you need to have a stomach of steele...my neighbor is one and she is a tough cookie...you really need to be...I wont get into detail ...because I sense you are more delicately sensitive... but the truth is it can get nasty...beyond the smell.....!

I just read and I must admit its kinda funny.....I dont agree but i like the way she wrote it....I just had my shower and I feel squeaky clean...and inergized too....and the hair thing...my needs washing every day....or else its not pretty.....Thanks Carma...for my early morning laugh..!

I think I'm probably as squeamish about touching people as you are - imagine digging your hands into potentially pudgy (smelly) spotty, hairy flesh. (And the men would probably be even worse). Masseurs should earn danger money.

Oh and I'm older than you and *still* thinking about what I'd like to be when I grow up. I've briefly toyed with the idea of dentistry because I reckon dentists earn fantastic money...and I'd be helping people...but then I think about shoving my hands in all those potentially stinky oral cavities and it's back to the drawing board. ;)

I find feet repulsive!!! I cannot touch other people's or have mine touched. I know, I'm mental. I feel so sorry for the people having to give pedicures to women...disgusting! Ok, anyway...I do the same thing. I was going to become a dental hygenist (I have no idea where that one came from), but realized that people's nasty breath and teeth would be vomit inducing for me. haha. I would go back for accounting/bookkeeping, but I don't want to go back to school! College was bad enough the first time around, ugh.

I'm OK with touching people I know, but past that- no.

My complete and somewhat irrational fear of dead things prevented me from going into the medical field. I'm fine with the idea of treating sick people; but there's no way I'll cut up a dead person to learn how to do it.

OMG could you possibly post any funnier stuff???

My first thought was not just smelly people ... what about hairy people ... that would gross me out.

My second thought was ... do people just fart away when they are relaxed like they do in yoga? ... I had to stop taking any yoga classes ... It didn't look good for me that I was dying laughing during the whole class.. :))

I used to work at the front desk of a very posh spa near LA, and a LOT of people were stinky or gross. The massage therapists would talk about it in the break room. They are good people to deal with all of that, but they aren't saints - they still notice if you don't shower!

I should think that most massage patients were kinda passable, but yes, there are bound to be those which are just vile! Or might have some form of questionable fungus, growth, or yes, smell.

Good call.

I couldn't do the massage thing either. I love getting them, but no way am I giving one to a stranger...

I prefer to be on the recieving end of a massage - no way could I touch people like that. And I am 43 and still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. Sad....

I love getting massages.

I'm not sure I would want to be an LMT however. Yeah, the stinkies are a good reason. Then there's the "automatic responses" from guys...you know?

No way could I touch smelly, hairy strangers. And feet? *shiver*

I'm with you. Baby tootsies are the only ones I'm willing to go near!

I'm so with ya on the feet! If your feet are older than three....DO NOT touch me with them!

I'll have to go back and read yesterdays post...

I am thinking that your husband will the most bummed about you not pursuing that degree--he would could have been the always available practice partner.

I was the practice stooge when the Mrs. was pursuing an advanced Psychology degree. Nothing like having to sit for those various tests and then having her classmates laugh at my results.

Definitely not the job for me. Don't like touching strangers. Don't like feet. Sometimes I don't even like people.

My sister is a massage therapist, and I her special skill is to come home and smudge away the bad energy and skin cells using sage and long showers. Seems to work ok, but now she's going to school for acupuncture, so who knows.

The feet thing is why I could never ever work in a nail salon either! GRRR-OOO-OOO-OOO-SSSSSS!!!! I find feet to be all kinds of nasty!!! It is exactly why I loathe flip-flops, too. Not just on me....on EVERYBODY!!! I think they are THE worst invention EVER!!! Nobody needs to say anybody's nasty feet...and feet are nasty. I don't care how pretty someone thinks their feet are because they just got a pedicure or whatever...nope, uh-uh. They are still FEET!!! Blech! I am gagging now...

Wait...this was about massage school, right?!

~Kristen~ said...

Now I am thinking I may have to do a post on my disgust with flip-flops!!! :-)

I prefer to be the one getting the massage, not giving. Selfish, I know.
On that note, I'm still contemplating what career I want to go into.
