My Teeth Will Thank Me

After 12 years of wearing a nightguard that I have ground to bits with my teeth grinding, I have made an appointment to have a new mold made. Yay!!! I'll consider it $500 well spent.

This may not seem like a huge deal, but to someone like me who grinds the heck out of my teeth each night, it is a lifesaver.

My jaw has started up with that dull ache at more frequent intervals signalling that I have pretty much worn the life out of the nightguard. That combined with the clenching of teeth that I do during the day (thanks to my job and other factors) has contributed to a bad case of bruxism. I love that word.

Bruxism: The habitual, involuntary grinding or clenching of the teeth, usually during sleep, as from anger, tension, fear, or frustration.

Anger, tension, fear, frustration pretty much sums things up for me. I've made no secret about the fact that I have started a new plan to combat my anxiety in earnest.

Dentists are making big bucks of the recent economic downturn, busy filling up their schedules with fellow teeth grinders who have cracked their teeth. My goal is to avoid getting to that point. I have worn a nightguard for over 20 years and without it there is no doubt I would have filed my teeth completely to the gums by now. Which is sad :-(

Any other bruxist bloggers out there??

BTW, as you can imagine I am a hot sexy sight to behold at bedtime. Not only do I wear the nightguard on top; I have a retainer for my bottom teeth and let's not forget the wrist brace for carpal tunnel. Yeah baby!!! Victoria's Secret should be calling any day now to hire me for some boudoir photos....

I clench my teeth when I'm stressed. It gives me headaches too. And yes, I wear the wrist braces for carpal tunnel every night. For the rest of my life.

I used to, but now I'm retired and it went away..go figure!

I have grinded my teeth so much, they've cracked!!!! I've many a crown because of it... sigh...

I've got those cheap mouth guards but can only keep them in for so long because they're so bulky & gag me!

I'm lucky with my choppers. I have a pretty nice set, BUT I haven't visited a dentist in over 20 years.

I'd be in serious trouble had I not been fortunate to have gotten a good genetic bounce with this ball.

Whatever you're doing, keep it up. You have a nice smile :-)

You have just reminded me that I REALLY need to go to the dentist. I'm so afraid of it though that it's kept me away for the past...while. :)

My hubs grinds his teeth sometimes, but I don't think it's bad enough for him to need a mouthguard or anything. I know it hurts his jaw a bit though.

I clench my teeth A LOT during the work day (must be a side effect of teaching, no?). I should probably check into a night guard myself!

I'm not a teeth clencher, thank goodness for that. I did, however, spend no less than eight years in braces... three of those years wearing a retainer (day and night) that locked my jaw shut so that I had to talk through my teeth.

I know this is fairly common. I'm sure you look hawt.

haha, that is hilarious! You should see me at night. My husband calls me Faranoosh, not sure how to spell it. But I wear a bandanna over my hair at night because I leave in a hair treatment. Plus I too wear a retainer at night. When I think of your night guard, I think of the movie Date Night. Did you see? SOOOO funny! Loved that movie.

LOL

my hubster grinds his teeth as well. He said it started in college. He was so stressed out that his hands started shaking as well. He still wears a mouth guard (bought from the store), but he doesn't grind them as much and I would know because he has woke me up in the middle of the a few times now grinding the heck out of them. I couldn't believe how loud it was! I woke up to a freaky noise. I just laid there real still, listening and trying to figure out what it was and then I knew it was him. hahaha

My daughter is one of these. I can't stand to sleep in the same room with her... when she's not using her mouth guard that is. The grinding teeth drives me nuts.

I wear a retainer every night that protects me. I often wake up clenching. So annoying!

I sometimes wear a wrist brace, but that's about it. However, my husband uses a CPAP machine at night and, let me tell you, that is SEXY.....

Wow, I learnt a new word! :D Definitely money well spent if it makes your nights (and following days) more comfortable.

I'm pretty sure I do it too! HAven't been to a dentist for the same reason...am quite the ostrich head in the sand type.

No I don't grind my teeth, but I have so many other dental issues. Ugh.

I'm a tooth-grinder, too. Hell on my molars, you know what I mean?

You truly are beautiful!! With all the extra apparatus that you take to bed with you, it's like you're bionic woman!
Sometimes I wear a wrist brace on both hands, but one is really big and goes halfway up the arm-and is blue. The other is black and looks like a bowlers type. Those are really hot.

I can't get a mouthguar in my mouth without gagging. I really should have one though.

I am not a teeth grinder. Too bad the inserts likely limit your ability for musical performance while dreaming--as I have done that before.

My teeth thank me all the time. Usually because I don't ridicule them when they put on a few pounds...

I clench my jaw when I'm stressed out, and I get migraines a lot!
My husband is a night-time teeth grinder, and wears a guard.

you know it's funny, i always struggled with depression (since like age 8 or something) but never anxiety...until i got pregnant and now that i have two children i feel like i have more anxiety than i can handle...i hold all my stress and tension in my shoulders/neck and have literally sobbed during a good massage with the release...one product i would recommend you look into is "rescue remedy" it is in hippy stores (natural whole foods type places) and i usually use it for my children when they slam fingers in doors or something but even a few drops on one's head (kids) or swallowed (adults) works for me, too...look forward to following your blog!

Hey, you do what you have to do. Better that than becoming an old lady with short buck teeth stumps and seized up painful wrists that make you grouchy.

Ooh, the aching jaw sounds painful - I'm glad you're getting the new tooth guard to help sort it.

Jenn@ You know... that blog? said...

Poor you - I could never wear anything in my mouth due to a high gag reflect. Even the thought... excuse me for a sec... almost had to throw up!

I had terrible carpal tunnel for years, but made drastic changes to my work station in my office here, and started specific exercises and it has all but stopped bothering me. I also stop working frequently and do those exercises for a minute or two. Helps a ton.

Have a great weekend!

I wear a night guard faithfully, I mean I couldn't imagine going without it but I had to have mine remade after two years. Are you serious, you really went 12 years with the same night guard! Wow!

Hehe, that made me laugh. You could combine the mouth wear WITH a sexy Victoria Secret nightgown. Just a thought :p

I have TMJ, which is a thing with a joint in my jaw. When I get super stressed, my jaw won't open all the way. I need to get my wisdom teeth out, otherwise I think I'd have adult braces. At 25. I would look 13 haha. Nothing like spending a lot of money at the dentist!
