The Ultimate Bromance

Step aside MB and "skater boi," (who incidentally are back "on") there's a new bromance in town!!

If you get a chance over the break to see Sherlock Holmes - I highly recommend it. VC and I have just returned from our excursion to the new theatre located right down the block!

We saw Sherlock Holmes, with Robert Downey, Jr. as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson. Fantastic flick!! Lots of drama and magic and plenty of bromance between these two hotties. I have always been drawn to the dark/quirky badboy troubled poet types (I mean really it doesn't get more dark and brooding than MB) and RDJ fits the bill. Sure, he's weathered a bit over the years, but it is a "good weathering." Plus, you will get to check out his carefully sculpted physique in the boxing scene. Who knew what he was hiding!!

I've thought Jude to be quite delicious too, since seeing him in The Talented Mr. Ripley. No wonder Sienna keeps returning to him despite his "moral shortcomings" ;-)

Anyway, this movie (and the playful bromance) is not to be missed. Check it out. I give it "5 clicks of my zils"

One Step Up from Redneck Christmas (Maybe)

VC's favorite Christmas Song is Redneck Christmas: ♪ ♫ 12 Pack of Bud, 11 Wrasling Tickets, 10 Copenhagen, 9 Years Probation, 8 Table Dancers.....♪ ♫ I'm sure it may also be your favorite holiday tune too, since it is a catchy number...

Anyhoo, we are very practical out our place. Almost too practical (and it is mostly my doing on this account - my nickname is "The Fun Ruiner")

As VC was opening up his stocking (and mind you these were all things he put on his list - himself), MB commented that they were weird to give as Christmas gifts. If it says anything about my state of mind, I hadn't thought of them as odd until he mentioned it....

Here's a small sampling: Hershey's Chocolate Syrup, Croutons, Black Electrical Tape, Bird Seed, 4 Hour Extended Life Battery for camcorder....and I'd go on only then I would further embarrass myself*....

VC is holding up some of those "goodies" in this here photo:

*Note: VC also did receive some cool real Christmas gifts, so don't be sad....

VC is covering his lip in the photo because he had surgery on his lip this week and has stitches sticking out of his mouth. He seriously resembles a catfish :D I have been saying he had a "Lip Tuck" or alternately, a "Lip-o-suction" (I'm quite the humorist, I know ;-)

C'mon, fess up, what "redneck" Christmas Gifts were on your family's list?

Foreshadowing to future blog post: Today I discovered why t*pless beaches are so popular.....

Ready For Christmas - In the Wurst Way!!!!

MB is a man of many traditions. Every year, he and VC would drive an hour to visit the "authentic" German market to stock up on wursts (love that word!!), Brochen, German Ham, and "Gelts" (click to see fun pic :D ....

However, we recently got word from another stubborn German that the store had gone out of business!! This sent MB into a funk - and onto the interwebs -

....Where he finally located a German company that was able to ship him some Westhepalian Ham and Gelb Wurst in a frozen state.

It wouldn't have been Christmas without it.

What Christmas foods can you not live without?

[P.S. I like to impress MB with my knowledge of German (which I pronounce -"Scher-man"); words include: beer garden - which I pronounce "bier gar-ten" - and "shanken" - my word for German ham. Oh, and a long drawn out auuuuuuuuges "eyes" Gets him every time!)]

A Little Wounded Bird

A post by my bloggy friend Tammy, (love her!) brought to mind an incident that happened this week, wherein I, "big brave Carma", was compared to a little wounded bird....

I need to be a little cryptic about the situation, but the general gist was that I was speaking to a particularly challenging individual who is very intimidating, at which point I burst into tears...I was tired of the constant challenges to any topic I brought up and was exasperated trying to get my point across and feeling grossly undervalued. Again. Midway through the discussion she said I looked like a little wounded bird.

The sad thing is that this statement is more true than I care to admit. Since I'm too cheap to go to a shrink, I did a quick self-diagnosis: Most of my difficulties boil down to the fact that I hate to disappoint anyone. Ever.

I've been bullied by several individuals over the years and have rarely fought back. Is it time for the little wounded bird to kick some serious buttocks????? Me thinks so. Other sad truth: That is unlikely to happen. I realize how often I tell my son not to "end up like me." Who wants to grow up to be the wounded bird instead of the proud eagle? He's going to be an eagle. I just know it. *runs to get tissues*

But fret not peoples, I have just received an awesome blog award with seriously the nicest "tribute" ever from Cristina at When is There Time To Sleep. Cristina has a wicked sense of humor. Head on over and check out her blog!
I know I'm supposed to be passing this on to my sweet blogging friends, but since it is 12:45 am and I was so excited I had to add it to my post toute de suite!

If you are a regular commenter to my blog, consider yourself awarded. If you do a "Ten Things That Make Me Happy List" - please let me know so I'll be sure to visit your site to read it :-) Thanks Cristina!

And the Winner is......

....I'll never know!!!! Because MB blew his nose loudly at the EXACT MOMENT the radio station was announcing the name of the person to call in and win. And there was only ONE chance to hear the name. I was at the ready - ear near the radio and then bfffffftssstttttffffffppppppppp MB blew his nose LOUDLY (one of those old man nose blows)....

I'll admit that I'm a sucker for the occasional radio contest. This particular one, sponsored by a local radio station, asked listeners to register online and then listen for their name to be called 4 times a day. I was scheduling my errands around those 4 times a day so that I would be near a radio at that time (since I'm crazy insane like that) - since listeners only had 30 minutes to call a special line after their name was called.

All winners (who called in) won a gift certificate and were also put in a drawing for $4,000 diamond earrings from a local jeweler. Now I'll never know what it may have been like to wear these babies...

Is the loud obnoxious Man Nose Blow really that more effective than a dainty Lady one???

It Never Takes Long for the Haters to Emerge

I was on twitter last night when the news came in about the accidental drowning of @Miliary_Mom's son Bryson Drago Ross (seen here in this twitpic that she posted this morning Several online friends of hers immediately posted their condolences. At least one of the them had met Shellie Ross (@Military_Mom) in person at a blogging conference.

I checked out MM's twitter account and indeed she had tweeted about the drowning and asked for prayers. I posted a couple messages on some of the tribute posts in show of support and many others did as well.....

Well, it didn't take long for the haters to emerge on Twitter. @Military_Mom has been responding back to them, but hopefully she will just let it go. Several have written tweets accusing her of neglecting her child and Tweeting while the incident happened. Of course, no one knows the actual circumstances, but that doesn't stop the conjecture and hate.

I always wonder what this type of individual (hater) is like in real life. Do they hide behind their twitter accounts or attack people they meet in person, too....

Maybe some may not find it appropriate for her to be tweeting so soon after his death, but until you have experienced the same loss, who are you to say what is or isn't appropriate...For many bloggers, their internet friends are only a click away and more "there" for them than some of their real life friends....

Just some thoughts. I know that people are extra diligent about verifying things, especially after the whole April Rose hoax, but by all accounts (the story has just been verified in a local paper Florida Today) this is a real story with real people, that is a real tragedy...

Stylin' and Profilin'

The selection of a profile pic is such a critical thing - you don't want to scare readers away- or attract the wrong kind of readers...(who am I kidding, I'll take any readers I can get ;-)

You may have noticed that I switched my profile pic, and now I'm in a quandry....

Do you prefer the former, more carefree picture (which is ironic because I don't recall ever having felt carefree even in my childhood) - or this new, more formal Carma complete with "poils"?

Why am I wasting a blog post on such a non-topic??? Because I haven't had anything monumental going on in my life this week. The Christmas cards are still sitting awaiting addressing, shopping is yet to be completed and unlike the ever-busy blogger Yaya, I did not sell and buy a house this week!!!!!

Thanks for visiting me here in Dullsville - and please leave me a comment about my profile pic..."yay" or "nay" or "I find neither flattering/hire a professional"!

In case you forgot what the former pic looked like:

Dang. Now I'm getting all nostalgic. BTW, my childhood friend calls me "Kermie" since she says my smile reminds her of Kermit the Frog. Is that a good thing???

Stop the presses!!! Sideways Carma is back in da house :D After reading your comments and seeing the new pic on my page, I have decided to stick with my old self. I've never been formal a day in my life, so why start now!!

If you would still like to weigh-in - this was the new profile pic that was up for less than 24 hours....
The reason for the "formality" was that this was the outfit I wore to MB's company party last weekend. Figured best to dress like this than as a skanky ho ;-) [He is not employed by Tiger Woods]

I Can't Take Anymore GOOD NEWS!!

If you've been watching the morning shows this week, they've been covering all sorts of "feel good" stories. The Today Show has been doing a Good News segment. I guess it is in keeping with the holiday spirit. Yesterday they featured a family that had I think it was 9 kids, many of them adopted; The mother and her husband had even planned to adopt more, but sadly he passed away last year at the age of 48 from complications from diabetes - The family had hit on hard times....Enter Walmart to make the Christmas special for the kids...The family walked outside to find their lawn had been decorated with lots of coats, laptops, etc....choked back tears and hugs ensued.

Today the featured story was of a guy who was in peak shape, completing marathons and competing in the Iron Man challenge. Then in 2007 he had a horrific bicycle accident and was paralyzed from the waist down. Doctors didn't think he would walk, but he defied them and is not only "walking" but also climbed many flights of stairs at a fundraiser for the rehabilitation center. All this while maintaining a sunny outlook.

Yes, this is all fantastic news!!! The problem is that I watch the show while working out and in order to keep from sobbing all over my elliptical, I have to keep running to get tissues!! I've been literally bursting out in tears....

Tomorrow I'll keep the tissue box on the mat next to the elliptical. Although, with all of this pre-planning it will probably be a "bad news" segment.

Over at Good Morning America, the message boards have been buzzing over the change in hosts: Diane Sawyer moving to anchor World News Tonight and Chris Cuomo moving to 20/20. Diane will be replaced by George "Yawn" Stephanopoulus - big mistake!! and the affable Chris will be replaced by the more serious JuJu Chang. I suspect their ratings will be taking a bit of a plunge. I think that Chris is really the biggest loss. I loved his corny humor and easygoing nature...What are your thoughts??

Have a great weekend everbody!

Belly Dance Smackdown - It's Off!

Would everybody puh-leeeeze stop asking me how my dance class is going ;-)

Well, as long as you've asked: I have BIG news! I've actually had this news for over a month but so many more pertinent blog posts presented themselves that I had to put this one on the back burner.

Here's the story. Belly Dance Diva has dropped out!!! Suspiciously, her departure seems to have coincided with my taking over the lead position. Was it my lack of coordination that did the trick and scared her away- never to grace us with her Arabic twistback or Egyptian shimmy ever again??? She lasted a mere two weeks with me in the lead. I'll admit I did screw up a bit (a lot) when first learning the move that I would be leading: i.e. The Choo Choo (yes, that really is the name) - was this destiny?? (Remember not too long ago MB compared me to a steam locomotive!)

There is more dance news to come but it is still developing so I'll be putting it in a separate post. Oh, the anticipation!!

It's SITS-mas Time!

Today I am participating in the celebration over at SITS...

Wishing all you lovely SITStas a happy holiday season. I don't have any specific hopes for the coming year, so I made the mistake of asking "the boys":

One (Michael Jackson) said: "To worry less" - the other (The Grand Huzzah*) said "To complain less" - they don't paint such a pretty picture! In the future, I'm not asking their opinions...

Yet, their comments do tie in to the wish I've had for over three decades: To one day be at peace with myself...warts and all (no, I don't have warts, but I do have plenty of "and all")

To anyone else who is feeling conflicted, I wish the same for you :-) Now go forth and party on!

- Your SITSta in dance :D

(which reminds me- it's about time for the next Belly Dance Smackdown Update. Here's a little foreshadowing: You will not be hearing about any further smackdowns...)

[*My son was awarded the title of Grand Huzzah at the finale of the Renaissance Festival. It is a huge honor! (not to brag ;-) ]

P.S. If you are cringing at the template I picked for the card - in that it doesn't go with the photo, this was the only template available that the non-standard sized photo would fit in without cutting off our heads. But now that I think about it, how funky a card would that have been!! Next year!

Return to Sender

My shopping mall avoidance is not going as well as I had planned. Thus far I have ordered online from Sephora - and we all know what a brilliant success that was! And then last week I placed an online order for 2 new diabolos (Chinese yo-yo's) for VC.

Since he is now beyond the "Santa years" - I put him to work shopping online for his own gifts and doing price comparisons. Some may call it lazy - I call it resourceful!

The big box came yesterday and I opened it with him - since I promised he could use a set of the new diabolo sticks ahead of time (yeah, I'm um a softie)

Only to discover inside the box were two of these:

instead of two of this:

Can you spot the subtle difference?

Not a big deal, except this is the exact same mix-up that happened three months ago when we ordered from the same company!

I contacted a rep and they said I could simply mark the box RETURN TO SENDER. I was very skeptical because THE BOX HAD BEEN OPENED. Yet, as I heard the mail truck making the rounds in the neighborhood, I decided to see if I could quickly patch the box back together (it was one of those jimmyrigged boxes) --

Only one snafu:

Two rolls and neither had an obvious start to the tape. Sweat was beading down my face as I ran my hand round and round the rolls and could not find where to peel it off. Ended up having to use the heavy duty army tape.

Then I quickly slipped on my clogs. The mail truck was already at our neighbor's house. I ran up the street in my slippery clogs, over hazardous wet leave piles, around the corner, and was finally able to get the attention of the mail lady, who told me she would mark it REFUSED but that there was a good chance I would be seeing it again. ON MONDAY. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr......

Curious what VC has been working on with his juggling/diabolo:

added bonus: You will get to see our pathetic "natural area" on the front lawn ;-)

Does This Tote Make Me Look Chic???

I am usually not one to fall for gimmicks - srsly! But, when I got the email from Sephora advertising a free tote designed by tattoo artist Kat Von D with $25 purchase, I started getting all antsy. I HAD TO HAVE THAT TOTE TO MAKE ME LOOK CHIC YET ALSO EDGY. It was only available in limited quantities so I had to move quickly.

Since it was too hectic to venture anywhere within a 30 mile radius of the mall last weekend, I had a great idea! I would order my Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer online and get the free tote. Only I needed $8 more to qualify for free shipping. Toss in some Clinique Black Honey Lip Stain. There, I met the quota. Sat back eagerly awaiting the tote that would transform me from dorky to edgy.

My purchase arrived within days. I was so excited to see my "free" tote that cost me $62.00. You can imagine my disappointment:
Does this make me look chic yet edgy????

Big Books and Other Tidbits

First, let me congratulate the winner of Oh!Nuts Giveaway = entry #18 Christina! Christina will win one pound of bulk candy! Congratulations!

[Extra special thanks to my bloggy buddy Joy, who tweeted her heart out; Alas, the fickle had other plans...please stop by Joy's blog and show her some love so I don't feel like crap ;-)]

Here's a little cost-saving tidbit that you may want to use once your kids get to middle school and you are expected to purchase novels for their Language Arts classes. Again, I like to remind everyone that VC attends public school, not some fancy schmancy academy (although after recent events I may be rethinking this in the future ;-)

Typically the middle schoolers read 4 novels a year, in addition to their textbooks.

As soon as VC finds out he needs to purchase a novel, he tells me and I immediately drop everything, step away from the blog and put a "hold" on the book at the library. (The school bookstore inflates the prices by up to $5.00 a book) Even when there is a waiting list at the library - 9 times out of 10 it arrives in time. This saves around $50 a year figuring the books are around $10 each. Let's just say that fifty bucks can buy a lot of Smart Balance margarine.

Oh, here's a soundbite for today:

VC hops in the car after picking up the most recent book I ordered from the library (The Book Thief).

Me: "That's a huge book; are the words big?"
VC: "Looks that way"
Both breathe sigh of relief

Don't we sound like Ivy League scholars???

In other book news, would you believe what I saw on the table at the Book Fair at VC's school? .........None other than this "gem"
Lastly, thanks to all of you who have recently awarded me some generous blog awards.

Special Thanks to the lovely Lea from Snapping Panda, who graced my blog with the Best Blog Award!
If you get a chance to visit Lea's blog, you will enjoy her photography and insightful blog posts. If you are a regular commenter to my blog and don't yet have this one in your arsenal, please grab it!

My friend Dale, who blogs at Stroke of Living, awarded me this snazzy award. Dale is running a bit of a competition on Wednesdays with her Wordle Wednesday posts. I encourage you to check it out, as well as Dale's posts, which she approaches from her own unique perspective.

Thanks Dale and Lea!
