Chris Farley, A Touch of Irony & Giveaway Winners!

As you can see from my profile, I've always had a soft spot for comedian Chris Farley. After reading "The Chris Farley Show: A Biography in Three Acts" by his brother, Tom Farley Jr., I saw that he was just as likeable in real life, with childlike innocence, the way he was portrayed on SNL and in his movies.

I was saddened to discover his many vulnerabilities, including low self-esteem, anxieties including OCD, and, of course, his addictions. His relationship with his frequent acting partner David Spade was rife with jealousy and competitiveness, and according to the book, David could be somewhat conniving and disingenuous in his relationship with Chris.

Therefore, I was not surprised when I saw that David Spade is now making money from a Direct TV ad that features vintage footage of Chris Farley from the movie Tommy Boy. You can watch it here: http://abcnews.go.com/video/playerIndex?id=8927769

I'd love to hear your thoughts - tasteless or amusing?

Now, a touch of irony:

I glanced over at the google ad on my blog yesterday and here's what I saw:

On the upside, a least the online course would be much safer than the sweat lodge experience!!

Did anyone catch Bob and Sheri talking about bloggers this morning? I caught the tail end of the discussion on my way into work. Bob was skeptical, seeing newspaper journalists as more "legitimate" because they have degrees, vs. some [random person] at a computer. But props to Sheri for saying she would rather "wade through sewage than not be able to speak" (if freedom of speech on blogs was restricted.)

Which leaves me wondering where my blog falls in the news spectrum- more towards the sewage? :D

And lastly,

Congratulations to the winners of the Uprinting.com flat greeting card/postcard giveaway:

and Lisa, who said, "They would be great Christmas cards but I would probably use mine to send out to my Sunday school kids."

I LOVED Chris Farley... such a sad end to his story though...

I dont think the commerical is that bad... I mean, I enjoy seeing a clip from "Tommy Boy" & it doesnt really surprise me about David Spade taking advantage of it... but its a movie clip, so I dont think that makes it as bad. Now, if he had personal home video & used that, that would be tacky....

I don't think it is too bad but I can see why some people are upset. It is such a sad story that Chris died so young.

I didn't know that their relationship was that contentious (have not idea if that's spelled right!), but I didn't think that it was in such poor taste. The clip is from a movie that they were both in and he was reprising his role.

I actually think it brings back to the spotlight what a comical genius Chris Farley was and what a loss it was that he passed so soon. One of the best SNL skits ever is the 'van down by the river' skit. Awesome!

Hmmmm, this isn't good news...I was kind of banking on winning so I could use them as Christmas cards. I guess now I will have to figure something else out, ugh! :)

I love Chris Farley, so sad!

I don't have the background knowledge about the two gentlemen so I didn't think much of the commercial except that it was sad he died so young and for such terrible reasons. David Spade always came off to me as a 'CAD', no surprise he is a jerk. You know he actually throws things at the sightseeing vans that drive past his home. You know, I understand starts want privacy but the vans just drive past the home on a public street. If it wasn't for their fans these stars wouldn't be living in their outrageous homes.

So, us Bloggers BLOGS are SEWAGE and the journalist are what???? Whatever!

Hmmmm. I don't really think it's any less tasteful than any of the other ads in this series. (take that as you will...) It is sadder to know that their relationship was not as it was portrayed...I think I would like to read that book, as I like to scarf down all things SNL. Sigh.

I hate to hear that their relationship was like that. I can totally see it though. Poor Chris.

I didn't realize all that. I always liked David Spade but this makes me wonder...

It wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. But I don't think it was particularly funny either, although I do think Farley was a very funny guy. Not so much Spade.

Whatever, everything I read on blogs is 100% factual. Right?

I always thought they were pretty good friends.
I WON!! Yes!!

I've always thought those ads were funny and I like Chris Farley, so I don't mind seeing him again. My husband still loves to imitate him (in a vaaaaaaan, down by the riverrrr). I've always thought Spade was a loser though.

Am totally not surprised they clashed. All creative types do. Too bad because if you get two of them teaming up, you can get amazing results. Egos, egos, egos!

I was a big Chris Farley fan..and often loved him best in tandem with David Spade. And his death (and struggles) were so sad.

Off to check out the commercial now.

Sewage does not come to mind when I think of your blog. The commercial doesn't really strike me as that big a deal. Plenty of passed on celebs have had their image used to promote products. I didn't know that he and David had such a contentious relationship. How sad.

So now we're sewage? Oh man.

The commercial didn't seem bad to me. I don't know the story of their relationship though. I'm just used to seeing these types of things done so often now.

I didnt mind the commercial a bit... was kinda glad to see Mr. Farley back on the small screen. That was such a funny scene anyway... now a whole bunch a people who may have enver known about it will get to see it...

I am SO bummed I did not win!

:(

Blessings-
Amanda

I think those direct TV commercials are awful anyway. They are always using shots of dead actors, it's totally creepy. That one wasn't as bad as the poltergeist one. That being said, it makes me sad that they weren't friends in real life, I always assumed they were.
