Must NOT See TV

My dorky self was all excited to sit down and watch the Thursday night lineup on NBC last night. Man, what a disappointment!!!

First up, the SNL Weekend Update segment was OK, save for the lame James Carville skit. "Whitney said her drug was Bobby Brown. Oh, and her other drug was drugs." :D

Then came Parks and Recreation. As much as I love Amy Poehler, and had seen the promo for last night's show and thought it seemed a littler funnier than past shows, I just had to skip it, so I got out the vacuum instead. (props to me ;-)

The Office - finally some decent TV. Michael making awkward phone calls and spreading rumors is Michael at his best, and I love how Jim stepped in to confirm the pregnancy rumor in order to save Stanley embarrassment. Jim is always so gentlemanly that it makes me want to date him...
I had high hopes for Community. What a colossal letdown. The Breakfast Club theme worked well in the 80's - but this "remake" didn't quite do it for me. The characters seemed forced and the script contrived.

And talk about playing up the stereotypes: a divorced single mom, the token old guy played by Chevy Chase (who was not used to his potential IMHO) the dim witted jock, the pretty girl, the smart girl, the Middle Easterner with accent and the wise guy played by Jack McHale, who I normally like.

The script was predictable. Do you mean the Dean didn't really give Jack the answers to all the tests - that's surprising!! The cute chick hates him but then comes to like him. Everyone is all one happy cohesive group by the end.

And I don't know if anyone caught the reference to Asperger's and the chuckles about it being "ass burgers" said several times. As you know, I'm all against the PC, but this seemed a little in poor taste.

I'm not gonna give up on this one - YET, but they better come up with something less lame for next week. After my exciting workdays, lord knows I need a diversion!

I agree, The Office was the only thing I enjoyed. I didn't even watch the first two...I can't believe that Parks and Recreation didn't get cancelled!

I watched the season premiere of Fringe last night and thought it was pretty good. I've got Office and Community tivoed and look (looked) forward to watching those this weekend. Bummer on Community! We LOVE Joel McHale from the Soup and were looking forward to seeing it. Oh well... one less thing to tivo on Thursday nights! I'm in the middle of watching Project Runway too. Dresses made out of newspapers???! Awesome.

I'm a satellite woman. Benn stuck on HBO and Starz lately.

Sketch comedy/sitcom TV has been dissappointing for a while now. I used to work on some of these TV shows and if the behind the scenes lameness [verbal abuse, theft and suicide] is any indication of what makes it on the air, trust me vacuuming is always a better idea. Hollywood can be very, very ugly!

Yes props to you!!

NNOOOOOOOOOO! I was so excited about Community -- being currently enrolled in Community College of San Francisco -- and realizing that the CC is a comedy goldmine. I'm in Sonoma now so can't see it until I get back to the Tivo. I'm going to hold out for it. I thought the premise was that the stereotypes gather, but in the course of the show, we find out the stereotypes are much different than you'd expect.

Still hoping. Because, if the previews are anything to go by, they haven't even begun to tap the hilarity which is community college. Not that people aren't actually getting a good education there. So excuse me as I go back to conjugating my Spanish verbs like a chica loca.

And can I be in Chevy Chase's study group?

Totally forgot that yesterday was the start of Community! Oh well, I guess I feel better that I didn't miss much. I did miss The Office though...bummer.

I still say rock!!!!

I only allow myself to watch a few shows every season so I'm not stuck in front of the tv all night and The Community was one I am planning on trying out. It's on my DVR and I haven't seen it yet. The only other new show I am thinking of watching is Cougar Town. Hopefully they don't disappoint too much.

I'm gonna have to live vicariously through you as I was slaving away on my computer after the kids went to bed last night and did not even get to see Real Housewives of Atlanta!

(sniffle)

I meant to watch Community simply because Joel McHale is one of my favorite comedians and I try to never miss a new episode of The Soup. And I thought Chevy Chase would lend some credentials to an otherwise run-of-the-mill sitcom.

But I forgot! Argh. Doesn't sound like I misses a whole heck of a lot.

I need to get caught up on The Office. Used to watch it regularly but I fell by the wayside with it.

OH my gosh so I was just thinking about when you told me about the sugar cookie incident at your house where you practically were beating your husband with the cookie sheet...

Good times.

Amanda said...

Yeah... I am still laughing about that.

Why do you tell me this stuff? the visual gets stuck in my head FOREVER.

I am going to make my husband read your blog so he can finally understand what I mean when I say,
"well, carma says..."

I gave up on the NBC lineup a while ago...so thanks for validating my decision! :) I was, however, going to give Community a shot - I forgot it was premiering last night because I was all about Bones and Fringe premiering. I'll probably catch Community on Hulu and see if it gets any better, or watch it when I have nothing else to do... ;)

I stuck with Survivor and Leno last night. Not sure I did too much better...

Ass burgers!?! haha I never watch much tv but now I'm thinking I should give up everything else and start watching. :) Nice job on the vacuuming though...vacuuming is my worst nightmare, hate hate hate it. ugh! :) I will clean my entire house and do everything else and then my husband will say "want me to vacuum?" It's so predictable it's sick! :)

I LOVVVVVVVVVE The Office. Jenna Fischer has a blog on MySpace and she's so accessible and friendly. She even swears she reads all her comments (although she doesn't reply directly to them). Anyway, I have Community on DVR but haven't watched it yet.

I was looking forward to that one as well and was so disappointed. I'm not even sure I'm going to give it a second chance.

I liked the Weekend Update thing. It was nice seeing Amy behind the desk again.

I actually liked Parks and Recreation better than I liked it last year - but - seriously - my Amy Poehler love knows no bounds, so I forgive her a LOT.

The Office was a riot. "How long have you known about this? A day? A week? A month? A YEAR?" And Kevin always makes me laugh. And The Office always makes me laugh.the

I was also MASSIVELY disappointed by Community, but the hubs liked it and - it WAS a pilot - so - I'll give it a couple weeks. (Oddly, I often err on the side of TOO PC, and I thought ass burgers bit was funny. Maybe what was funny was the way it was cracking them up because they knew it was naughty and juvenile and inappropriate. I guess it rang true to me.)

I had no clue about any of the shows. I have yet to watch Office, maybe I will give it a try!

Sometimes my discomfort re: Michael Scott is so great I can't enjoy the show. He's so inappropriate he's a not-so-funny Gilligan.

Tsk, tsk Carma; for the mention of political correctness and ass burgers whilst lauding the humor in Michael's rumor mill.
McHale's character was crass, but in poor taste?
You mean relatively speaking, right?

I'm with you about Community. I'll give it another week, or two, or forget entirely to tune in cuz that's how I roll.
I wanted a good laugh and more material for the mocking of my redneck Community Colon classmates.

I want to like Parks and Recreation because I like the cast but it is just ok. The Office is great as always. I so want to date Jim too. I haven't watched Community yet but I do love Chevy and Joel.

I'm no longer the t,v, connosieur I once was, but I saw Community at hulu friday morning and was pleasantly surprised. I cracked up laughing when that guy gave the banner year at the bender house speech from Breakfast Club. Amy and I haven't watched the office yet so I skipped over your review of that. Make sure you go back to my three things thursday post for my comment on your comment. I am expecting your participation come thursday. One of my 3 things may even be why I liked Community.

Glad you warned me about Community. I don't watch much TV, but that was one that I was considering.

I think Community was rough around the edges, but I will keep tuning in, because it seemed like it had potential. Plus Joel McHale. Loved the Office, though.
